Ideal Areas are a playscape consultancy and construction company. I was approached by the firm to give the brand an uplift and direction.
Industry research was conducted to find out what Ideal Areas did differently to their competitors; something that they can uniquely market. Research into the industry also brought to light a strong target audience and market position. Good branding is solution driven and without research, pretty logos and pictures can fall by the wayside.
How the brand looks, feels and sounds is all driven by the research conducted. This will always help a brand be even more appealing to the right people.
Buoy is a sustainable mens clothing project with minimal brand influence dedicated to recycling, reducing and reusing.
The project is limited to only ten garments of any one style, with each one having its own slight individual difference.
The t shirts are made from all organic cotton and boast a tailor made pocket, manufactured from post consumer recycled material.
All printing and packaging was done so using recycled mediums and a range of lower impact printing. The result is a fresh, minimalistic tee that feels great and even better knowing its sustainable value.
Coffee, Tea, Cold Drinks and Eats, hidden away from the daily grind.
Liquid Espresso is a small cafe making great coffee and eats, tucked away in a corporate building foyer. A tough business climate forced the closure of several offices in the building and this is when I was approached to create a new customer base on a tight budget.
The biggest weakness is the cafe's hidden location. The biggest strength is Liquid Espresso's amazing coffee. With a local customer base already established, I took to social media and newer technologies to exploit the product and create a broader reach.
A refreshed brand identity was designed, complete with custom icons, a menu design and internal advertising. All collateral encourages customers to spread the word through social media, and especially through the mobile app Beanhunter. [Beanhunter is regarded as the go-to app for coffee lovers in Australia.]
At the peak of the campaign Liquid Espresso reached number 1 for the Gold Coast on Beanhunter. The espresso bar continuously receives massive praise and has featured in multiple magazines and press. Coffee goers are traveling from as far as Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast [over 150km], just to try Liquid Espresso's Coffee.
GC Commonwealth Games
I created this concept project after the Gold Coast had won the bid to hold the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The logo mark drew inspiration from a Gold Coast wave, with an athlete taking form from a flame. The colour implemented represents the Gold Coast surf and amazing beaches along with the iconic Commonwealth flame.
An icon set was designed for each sport and follows throughout the event to create a clear and flowing way-finding system. Each icon follows the flame athlete and has a flow that moulds with the overall look.
Together the identity is strong, iconic and representative of not only the Gold Coast but the Commonwealth Games Movement.
Gold Coast Bodyboard Club
When creating a brand refresh it is always paramount that you recognise the strong and weak points of the existing brand.
Overall the brand needed a refresh to bring the logo away from the cliché bodyboarding silhouette and into a bright, exciting club atmosphere.
Inspiration for this project was taken from the competitors bright rash vests that are worn in each heat to differentiate each other. The minimalistic approach leaves a fresh palette amongst busy sponsorship logos and heavy corporate graphics that back the club.
Together the identity not only brightened up the club, it bought a new membership base and further reach to the bodyboarding community.
This is a small selection of logos I have designed in my career. This will be an on-going project so please check back on a regular basis.
When designing a logo I believe it is paramount to keep it simple, clear and memorable. A logo should remain timeless and be adaptable with its environment.
A logo that does these key things will form the basis of a strong brand identity.
